Britain’s Speech Police: How the State Learned to Fear its People
With 62,000 people arrested for speech crimes in five years, the UK can no longer claim to be a free society, says Paul Birch. The state has learned to fear its people and will no longer tolerate them speaking freely.
Many of us in Britain still flatter ourselves that we live in a free country. Although the UK isn’t quite a police state (not yet anyway), neither is it a country in which the individual can any longer speak without glancing over his or her shoulder. The old compact of a liberal society was simple – the state punished genuine criminality, while opinion was left to the rough justice of argument, satire and public disagreement.
That compact has now been comprehensively torn up. Across Britain, speech that would once have been answered by rebuttal or humour is now treated as a matter for police, regulators and secretive Whitehall machinery. A report published this week by civil liberties and privacy campaigning organisation Big Brother Watch states that more than 62,000 people in the United Kingdom were arrested for communications offences over a five year period, with at least 18,500 charged and 12,292 convicted. These numbers should alarm anyone who still believes the citizen is master and the state is servant.

Abridged speech is not free speech. If you don’t support speech you disagree with, you don’t support free speech. Some speech is not more equal than others.
There’s a reason “free speech” is the 1st Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Many people sacrificed their lives so that US citizens and others across the world could speak freely, without fear of retribution. Fight for it, just like they did.
Because when it’s gone, so aren’t these United States.

Texas Woman Arrested After Facebook Post Over Unsafe Brown Drinking Water: Report
Jennifer Combs posted the message on April 6 to her citizen-watchdog group page, Southern Belle Watch, urging residents who had been sickened by the city’s tap water to come forward.
“We have received reports that some citizens have been hospitalized due to bacteria in the water. This is a serious public health concern that deserves immediate attention,” she wrote. “If your water looks discolored, contains sediment, has a strong odor, or you have experienced related health issues, please send us a message. We are gathering information and reporting findings to the state.”
In what could be seen as a brazen move against free speech, Jennifer Combs was arrested on May 8.
Trinidad Police Chief Charles Gregory scrambled to defend the arrest, claiming the case was “cut and dry” and saying her claims about hospitalizations “are simply false and have only caused unnecessary fear and confusion in our community.”

The Metropolitan Police has so far not commented on the viral video of a female police officer defending freedom of speech surrounded by a crowd of angry Muslim men in Whitechapel but it has questions to answer.
This is the moment a police officer defends a Christian preacher in Whitechapel and is told: “This is a Muslim area.”

The confrontation sees a female Met Police officer being surrounded by males and telling them: “In this country, we have freedom of speech.”
She continued: “I understand that you guys don’t want to hear it, so I would just recommend that you walk away and don’t listen to him. He’s not in your home.”
Questions for the Met include: why is it that this police officer understands English law in a way that the three Met police officers who arrested Christian street preacher, John Sherwood, in Uxbridge in 2021 apparently did not?
